A Brief Summary:
The Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners is a non-profit, non-partisan organization. Formed from just eight people in 1996, we now have thousands of members and numerous affiliated clubs across the state. We're growing larger and more effective every day.
Our mission statement is: "Promoting safe use and ownership of firearms through education, litigation, and legislation"
MCRGO publishes a newsletter and maintains this website. We work closely with the Legislature on firearms-related legislation and sponsor town hall meetings around the state, bringing together legislators, MCRGO members and other concerned citizens. MCRGO was a vital force for securing the rights of Michigan residents to carry concealed weapons through the concealed carry reform law of 2000 and the substantial improvements that were passed in 2002. Our mission is to continue fighting for and improving the rights of all of Michigan's firearms owners who own long guns and black powder firearms as well as handguns. The newsletter and website inform our members of the latest in firearms laws, coming events, gun show locations, and places around the state where people can participate in a variety of shooting events.
MCRGO representatives are actively involved with proposed legislation in Michigan. Many times we have been the only pro-gun group testifying at committee hearings. MCRGO was closely involved in the passage of concealed carry reform and legislation which protects firearms manufacturers, distributors and dealers from lawsuits by cities and counties. We have become the "gun group" to which legislators and media representatives turn when they want information or perspective on gun-related issues in Michigan.
MCRGO maintains a Political Action Committee (PAC), registered with the State of Michigan, Bureau of Elections. Through this committee MCRGO has helped many pro-firearm legislators in state-wide elections. MCRGO was particularly helpful in three close Michigan House of Representatives elections in 1998.
The board members of MCRGO are elected from the membership. All of the money collected by MCRGO is used for MCRGO activities. These activities include distribution of information through newsletters and press releases, our website, town-hall meetings, legislative action, and the promotion of MCRGO.
Gun control" groups in Michigan maintain full time staff paid through large grants by out-of-state foundations. For funding, we depend on our membership dues of $30.00 per year, plus contributions from concerned citizens.
Local clubs and associations may affiliate with MCRGO for a donation of $1 per member. Please ask your local club or association to consider MCRGO affiliation.
The Michigan Coalition for Responsible Gun Owners has formed a separate corporation, MCRGO Foundation, to serve as our fundraising, charitable arm. The Foundation's mission is to educate the public on the Second Amendment, Michigan's Constitutional Right to Bear Arms, and the safe ownership and usage of firearms.
The Foundation has been established as a charitable organization qualifying for IRC 501(C)(3) status. Any donation of money or property to the MCRGO Foundation is tax deductible. Several online shopping links on the MCRGO website benefit the MCRGO Foundation by donating a percentage of every purchase made through the site.
A volunteer board of directors administers the Foundation. Board members are selected for their knowledge, experience, and commitment to fostering the intent and goals of the Foundation mission. Questions concerning the MCRGO Foundation can be directed to M. Carol Bambery.
